African American film director, producer, writer, and actor who isn’t that well known, but has some of best beautifully shot films with uncommon themes under his belt, such as Killer of Sheep, My Brother’s Wedding, and Selma, Lord Selma, cameraman and writer for Billy Woodberry’s Bless Their Little Hearts, while also contributing to the cinematography for Haile Gerima’s Bush Mama. His work takes an artistic look at Black life, and some argue that his best films, which were released in the mid 70’s were a response to Blaxploitation films of the era.
